ISS Blog Hop – Mom’s Kitchen… A Taste of Love

This month we were inspired by our moms and our stomachs. When I think of my mom, crafting is definitely something that comes to mind. She’s not just a stamper, she’s also a sewer, and she’s thrilled that I’ve finally started picking up her life long hobby.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it, but I’ve been getting into quilting. So much so, that I decided to make a quilt block inspired card. It didn’t come out exactly like a quilt block, but I think it’s really neat.

The front piece of this card is 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ black cardstock. To make the shape you need eight 1″ x 1″ squares, two of each design (I used the backs and fronts of DSP so I just cut four 1″ x 1″s with two DSP stacked on top of each other). Then cut four of the squares in half diagonally, and you’ll be ready to make this design.

I used dimensionals to adhere all the squares and triangles. I recommend 1) laying it out first and 2) starting with the outside triangles.

By the way, do yourself a favor and buy this stamp set. It is a wonderful sentiment pack for the women in your life and there is also a corresponding set for men! You’ll never need to worry about having a sentiment for a Mother’s/Father’s/Son’s/Daughter’s/Aunt’s/Grandpa’s/etc. Day again.

This was the easiest fun fold I’ve ever made. I used Karen Titus’s directions to make a Z-Fold Card. You need one pieces of 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ cardstock and one piece of 4″ x 12″ patterned paper, scored at 2 1/2″ and 6 3/4″. Just adhere the DSP to the cardstock, glue something to the front, and you have yourself a fun fold!

I glued a 2 1/4″ x 4″ piece of cardstock behind the front part of the patterned paper to reinforce it, but it’s not necessary.

The patterned paper in this card is all from the new Mixed Media Florals DSP. I wasn’t sure what I’d use the piece bordered with flowers for, but I think it’s perfect for this card design.

As I mentioned, we were inspired by our moms and our stomachs this month, and so we wanted to share some of our favorite recipes that we learned from our moms.

This recipe has been passed down through many generations of moms in my family. My great-grandma used to make this for my grandma, who made it for my mom, who made it for me.

Grandma Borden’s Bran Muffins

Makes 3 dozen.

  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup All Bran
  • 2 cups Bran Flakes (or Raisin Bran)
  • 1 stick butter
  • 2 /2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. baking soda
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup dates

Pour boiling water over both brans and let cool. Cream butter and sugar, then add eggs. Add dry ingredients and buttermilk alternately. Stir in dates and raisins. Put in covered container and place in refrigerator. Keeps for 2 weeks.

Preheat oven to 400 and bake in greased muffin tins for 20 minutes.

My mom likes to keep some of the batter in her fridge and make just a few fresh in the morning. They are so good with butter on top.

Make sure you check out what my mom made! I can’t wait to see what recipe she chose to share.

Let me know if you try the recipe and happy crafting!
